Too good not to post!...BORROWED!

"STINKIN' THINKIN'

I turned my dishwasher on the other day and, Pew! The smell was awful! I tried to run extra water through the sinks and relieve my suffering nose from the stench but to no avail. After fixing supper last night, my sweet hubby was helping clear the dishes and put them in the dishwasher. When he tried to use the garbage disposal, it backed up and filled the sink with yucky water! YUCKY YUCKY water! Well, to make a long story short, he got it unplugged and we figured out why my dishwasher was stinking...it was the garbage disposal, not the dishwasher that had a problem. From now on, I will be careful not to put cut flowers down the garbage disposal. They are pretty in the vase, but when they get old, they can really stink!

Lord, help me get rid of my stinkin' thinkin' and focus my thoughts on things that are pure, things that are lovely and things that are of a good report. These good  things will unplug my heart of the decomposing thoughts that linger in my mind for too long and make my life stink! Help me to check my "garbage disposal" frequently so anything coming out of my mouth will be fresh and sweet."

Glorious Sunshine!

Hard to believe I haven't posted for so long!  One thing I want to work on this summer is collecting kitchen stuff - like serving bowls, utensils, plates and so on for having dinner parties.  I decided at Christmas last year that I need to get over the fact that my house is small and just have parties anyhow.  They may have to be smallish, but I still can do it!  SO!  I march onward to THAT goal.  I've also been looking at some neat ideas for changing our home like new paint, accessories and such.  This picture inspires me a great deal.  Believe me there are other pictures!  LOL!  Can't wait to get to work on a project.

Saturday was such a good day.  We got up late and took our time about getting outside, but when we did we really worked hard.  Glen mowed the yard and cleaned the gutters.  Me and the kids worked on raking leaves/pine needles, caulking all our cracks on the outside of the house, cleaned down the outside basement steps (ECK!) and cooked.  We were starving by the time we finally sat down to eat.  I fixed baked spaghetti.  YUM!  Believe it or not it's my first time fixing that.  Turned out REALLY good!  And I fixed cheesy garlic biscuits to go with it.  Yum...we might have leftovers for supper tonight.  Can't decide between that and tacos.  Hmmm...

Sunday was GREAT!  Church was wonderful and afterward we got to have lunch with some friends and get to know two other couples better.  FUN!  Good food, good fellowship - great combination!!  And believe it or not I came home and washed clothes.  Then we discovered that the computer was acting CRAZY.  Oh, thrill...complete with eyeroll!  Finally got that "fixed" then we had popcorn and ice cream and watched Gilligan's Island.  The kids think it's pretty funny, but Glen and I usually sleep right through it!

Casey has done so well with her braces these first few weeks!  Incredible how quickly her teeth have begun to change.

On to supper!  Still don't know what we're going to have.  Maybe I should revisit the idea of menu planning!

Mother's Day 2011

WORLD’S MEANEST MOTHER
--author unknown

I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toast. When others had cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different than the other kids’ also.

But at least, I wasn’t alone in my sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. You’d think we were on a chain gang. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we’d be gone an hour, that we be gone one hour or less–not one hour and one minute. I am nearly ashamed to admit it, but she actually struck us. Not once, but each time we had a mind of our own and did as we pleased. That poor belt was used more on our seats than it was to hold up Daddy’s pants. Can you imagine someone actually hitting a child just because he disobeyed? Now you can begin to see how mean she really was.

We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath. The other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of insults because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. Why, oh why, did we have to have a mother who made us feel different from our friends?

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept-my mother actually had the nerve to break the child-labor law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, learn to cook and all sorts of cruel things. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

She always insisted upon us telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, even if it killed us- and it nearly did.

By the time we were teenagers, she was much wiser, and our life became even more unbearable. None of this tooting the horn of a car for us to come running. She embarrassed us to no end by making our dates and friends come to the door to get us. If I spent the night with a girlfriend, can you imagine she checked on me to see if I were really there. I never had the chance to elope to Mexico. That is if I’d had a boyfriend to elope with. I forgot to mention, while my friends were dating at the mature age of 12 and 13, my old fashioned mother refused to let me date until the age of 15 and 16. Fifteen, that is, if you dated only to go to a school function. And that was maybe twice a year.

Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. If our friends had a toe ache, a hang nail or serious ailment, they could stay home from school. Our marks in school had to be up to par. Our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother being as different as she was, would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put to shame. We were graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. None of us have ever been arrested or beaten his mate. Each of my brothers served his time in the service of this country. And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out? You’re right, our mean mother. Look at the things we missed. We never got to march in a protest parade, nor to take part in a riot, burn draft cards, and a million and one other things that our friends did.

She forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults. Using this as a background, I am trying to raise my three children. I stand a little taller and I am filled with pride when my children call me mean.
Because, you see, I thank God, He gave me the meanest mother in the whole world.

Happy Mother's Day, everyone!

More Later

I have seriously considered renaming this blog "More Later!"  Every time I write I feel like I leave out half the story.  Oh, well.

We haven't been doing so well about getting on the Feingold diet.  Too much stuff to use up, but I am slowly replacing stuff I'm out of with the good stuff.  Going grocery shopping is very frustrating right now because EVERYTHING is so expensive!  Don't know how we can even THINK about going on vacation with gas around $4/gallon.  Wow.  AND I don't even want to hear about coupons.  Completely hate them at this point - and it takes SO MUCH of my time.  My kids were sick of it and so am I!

Casey went to the doctor yesterday and has a sinus infection.  She's our little girl who never gets sick.  Anna come home from the doctor's office with a fever of over 101.  Jonathan is okay so far.  I feel like I'm getting sick, so I'm loading up on the Echinacea and Vit. C....and all the other vitamins and supplements I take.  It's gotten completely out of hand lately!  The top of my microwave looks like the Vitamin Store.  Crazy!

Of Blossoms and Blooms

The weekend was most enjoyable.  Far and ABOVE anything I could have imagined.  We took off on Saturday morning to the Peaks of Otter.  We were going to have a picnic by the creek or lake and take pictures, then go home.  WELL!  We got there and before you know it we are hiking up Sharp Top!  We had a man from Franklin County join us not long after we had started up the trail.  He had a dog named Cheerio which the kids just loved.  He seemed to be completely happy with walking with the kids and stopping every few minutes to make sure we were all still alive! What a hike!  I thought in the first few minutes that I was gonna die.  BUT I didn't want to "let on" too much in front of the kiddos.   Anyhow on the way up Anna made friends with another "Anna" who was more than twice her age.  Such a sweet girl.  I really feel like God put them and us right there together so we could all help each other get up the mountain.  We laughed at each other and goofed around.  It was neat to have good company.  All in all it took almost 4 hours for the whole trip.  The kids had been complaining about being hungry as soon as we had left the house, but they didn't say much about it at all until we got to the top of Sharp Top.  So, needless to say, the trip down was fraught with many, "I'm soooo tired." and "I'm so hungry I'm gonna die!"  Having the dog as a distraction on the way up was really a good thing!  We went down by the creek and ate our sandwiches and the kids got to play in the creek.  Glen and Jonathan threw the football across the creek to each other.  Every now and then it would "SPLAT!" in the creek which was followed by, "Oh, NO!" and giggles from the girls.  Everyone was truly happy in that little space of time and I just thanked the Lord for letting me see it again!  On the way home everyone was real quiet, but no one slept.  I really didn't want to go home.  But then Sunday wouldn't have happened.....

Sunday!  New Member Sunday at church!  What a fantastic day!  There were six young folks that got baptized and 3 new members.  Then a rousing sermon and fellowship afterward.  Then Anna had a little friend come home with her from church.  I just love my kid's friends!  Jonathan went to a friends house for the afternoon.  So, we got pizza and pigged out with our little guest and then I took a much needed nap.  Needless to say, I'm still VERY sore from our trip up Sharp Top.  Then last night around 9:00 we were all back together again, just in time to say goodnight and say night prayers.  I love my family!

Bleh @ WALMART

I needed to go to the grocery store yesterday.  Well, against my better judgment I went to Walmart just to see what all they had that was Feingold safe.  Well (again!), it is completely despicable how little they have in the way of no dyes, perfumes, preservatives and such.  Let's just say it was pretty much agony to find anything that was okay.  I left off some things that I know I can get at Kroger or the Co-Op.  So now comes the really hard part of adapting to having to go maybe three different places to get all the groceries and such that I need.  This is really an adventure, for sure!  Still excited and so ready to get completely on this diet!  It's pretty funny that now every time I serve the kiddos something they are saying, "Mom!  You know there's red 40 in that!"  Crazy, but so funny.

I didn't get up at 4 a.m. to watch the royal wedding.  We sat down and watched part of it this morning.  Now I'm feeling really behind, so I'm going to go finish getting ready for our weekend.  Tomorrow we are planning to go up on the Blue Ridge Parkway and take some family photos.  Hopefully I will have some to post soon!  Happy weekend everyone!

So why is it.....?

So, wonder why it is that I can think of the best posts when it's 2:00 AM?  AND the computer is in the other room where the 8 year old is sleeping.  AND I'm getting really tired of not using my family's names while blogging.  Hmmm.....  AND why do things always seem so wonderful in theory?  AND why do I miss my van so much when I don't have it?  AND why does the sound of a train whistle make me kinda sad?  AND why do my children think that we have an endless supply of money?  AND why do they behave JUST LIKE ME sometimes.  Okay...so I'm chuckling now.
